About DEN NY OPERA - THE NEW OPERA

Denmark’s third largest opera company, The New Opera is situated in The Performing Arts Centre in Esbjerg. The Performing Arts Center was designed by Utzon and The New Opera was established in January 1999. With two new productions for the adult audience and a minimum of one children production a year and an extensive touring activity, The New Opera is an essential part of the cultural life in Denmark.

The repertoire cover a wide field – from Handel to Carl Nielsen, with operas and operettas of Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Offenbach, Johann Strauss and others.

In 2003 The New Opera produced the first part of principal work in the 19th century opera-literature, Das Rheingold from Richard Wagner’s DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN. Second part, Die Walküre, was performanced in 2005, the third part, Siegfried, in 2007 and performance of the fourth part, Götterdämmerung, was produced in the summer 2008.

The New Opera is financed by Esbjerg Council in cooperation with the Governments Theatre Council. The company’s productions are furthermore based on contributions from private funds and sponsors.
